I have been turning all my old travel photos into music videos, and I am starting to get it right. I have put a page on tips for making better slide shows.

These aren’t boring slide shows either, but MTV-quality music videos. These movies are created using Animoto, a state-of-the-art, professional quality video production system. Here are some more vacation videos I have made from stills and video clips I took during a cross country trip I took a couple of years ago.

There are so many aircraft in the U.S. Air Force museum that it is hard to pick few enough pictures to make a reasonable length movie. So I limited these to bi-planes. Take a closer look at the Bi-Planes in the Air Force Museum.

When we rolled into Texas, we went to the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center. We later went to San Antonio and visited the Botanic Garden, then move on to Louisiana where we stay in a ‘historic’ building…

Let me share my Digital Slide Show obsession. I have been turning all my old vacation photos into music videos and I would like to share some with you here. I am using Animoto, and state-of-the-art video production system. My adventures at the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola and Fantasy of Flight in Polk City Florida.

Another travel video, this time of the Precolumbian Art Exhibit in Chicago.

While I was in Chicago I visited the Botanic garden. They have an outdoor train section there that was quite intriguing. A friend has an outdoor train set, so I shot these pictures for him, and now have turned them into a movie.

I have been using a number of onine free digital picture editing sites. Their software is all quite different, but all work on thsame principle – you load photos, edit and download the results.

One really handy digital picture software site is Picnik. This site allows you free access to basic photo processing functions. You upload your photos, manipulate them online, and download the finished product. You can resize, crop, manage the exposure, rotate photos and do other basic digital picture editing tasks. The service is free, and a small yearly fee unlocks a lot of advanced features. These include loading more than 5 photos at a time, mass processing, advanced photo effects, etc. I find that almost everything I need to do is available in the free package.

FotoFlexer is an interesting site with some nice ‘beautifying’ options to remove wrinkles and soften areas. It is a bit buggy, but is worth keeping an eye on due to some cool effects they have.

LunaPic in another online photo editor, but is has a lot of effects. It does a pretty good job to masking out areas with it’s ‘Magic Wand’, and it allows you to work in multiple layers for some PhotoShop type effects. It has multiple visual ‘undo’ states so you can go back to any point in editing if you make a mistake or want to try another approach. It also edits video, and will create animated GIFs. It also supports a wide range of file types.

Animoto’s artificial intelligence handles virtually all the decision making when building your digital slide show. The AI choices are superb, and there are few choices you need to make. In fact, at this time, there are few choices you can make. Here are some tips for making slide shows do what you want.

1) Use strong images. The AI engine examines every frame in your digital slide show. It does an amazing job of picking out visual elements to work with. Give it strong visual elements and the AI weaves the picture transitions around them. Couples fly together, buildings split into floor shaped blocks, flowers appear in a swirl.

2) Tell a story. Animoto loves sequences of related photos, and so does your audience. Use the Animoto story board and picture preview to make sure your pictures tell a story.

3) Use video clips. You can insert 3 to 6 second video clips, but a 5 second limit works best. The story board image editor lets you pick the section of your clip to use.

4) Your music determines the intensity of the slide show. Powerful dance tracks produce snappier transitions while slower music allows slower and smoother transitions.

5) Determine how long your slides are shown. During the ‘Finalize’ phase of making your slide show, you can select the slide speed. ‘Normal’ speed (the default)  displays each slide for approximately 4 1/2 to 5 seconds, and a 10 slide movie runs 50 seconds. Selecting 1/2 speed makes a longer movie from the same slides (66 seconds), while 2x speed runs through the pictures twice as fast (33 seconds). A 1/2 speed movie is twice as long as a 2X speed movie.

Most software packages need thick manuals to explain their use. Not Animoto.

With Animoto, you simply select the slides or video clips you want to use and Animoto loads them. You can drag and drop the slides to change their order, add text, delete, duplicate and rotate the slides. You can give slides the ‘star’ treatment.

Next, you select the music, either from their available tracks or from your own collection. All that is left is to give the movie a name and click ‘Create Movie’. You are pretty much done…
