California Gardening – Advice to Grow By.
The University of California has launched a new Web site to serve as an information portal for California gardeners. The UC staff designed the Web site to organize and extend UC’s vast store of research-based information about gardening, landscapes and lawns to the public.
The Web site focuses on sustainable gardening practices and uses a question and answer format to present solutions. A blog on the Web site’s home page, updated weekly, highlights gardening content pertinent to the season. The site also links to useful gardening resources on other UC Web pages.

Seed Suppliers
Seedsmen (and women) are great sources of information – the more they can tell you, the more often you will succeed and become a return customer. Besides offering seeds, all these on-line catalogs have a wealth of information from garden soil, design and planting through harvest and preserving your crops.
Renee’s Garden Seeds
Renee Shepard was Shepard Seeds years ago, and is again in Felton California, with test gardens in various California climates. Her seeds are extremely high quality and near perfect germination. All her varieties are tested and selected for suitability to our California climate, and the vast majority of her seeds have done well in Camarillo Heights. The seed descriptions are quite informative, and I have had exceptional luck with her stock – I think you will, too.

Seeds of Change
A very interesting place, started by some of the first eco-hippies who travel around the world collecting ancient grains, vegetable and tuber crops. They were some of the first people to preserve these ancient crops by dispersing their seeds about the country and encouraging their production. Some of the original members are still actively cross-breeding these old crops and developing new.selected varieties. They also offer an incredible selection of melons, garlic, corn, amaranth, quinoa and others – and multiple varieties of every veggie they offer. Free printed catalog to drool over…
Seeds From Italy
What can I say? We camped along the Italian western sea coast, and I took a stroll and took a peek at the backyard garden. Every veggie and tree they had, I had or recognised as growing here. A conversation (laughable in two languages, I’m sure) assured me I could get good seeds, and we went for a stroll. The Italian seeds are selections based on flavor and texture, and they are generally adapted to our region. Like those seed packets I bought that day in Italy, the Seeds from Italy packets are generous amounts, and in air-tight packets. Their seeds are producing some gorgeous ‘longo’ eggplant, and exotic melons as well
Here is a list I pulled off my business site and put on this site for your use. It list most of the crops you are likely to grow. It has recommended varieties (from the MG handbook) plus my notes on the ones I have tested here in the last few years. The Recommended Vegetable Varieties Page. Also check out the other pages I put under ‘Q&A’.
